Biography

Alison Trope is a Clinical Professor at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, where she also serves as the director of undergraduate studies. She is the founder and director of the Critical Media Project, a web-based media literacy resource focused on representation and identity across various dimensions such as gender, race, class, sexuality, disability, religion, and age. The Critical Media Project is utilized by both secondary and higher education institutions in the Los Angeles Unified School District and across the country. Additionally, Trope is on the Board of the National Association for Media Literacy Educators (NAMLE) and serves as the faculty director for the Institute for Diversity and Empowerment at Annenberg (IDEA). She authored "Stardust Monuments: Saving and Selling Hollywood" (Dartmouth, 2012), which examines the ongoing efforts to memorialize and canonize the history and significance of Hollywood as it intermingles with everyday lives. Trope has taught a range of courses at the Annenberg School, including media and digital literacy, popular culture, visual culture, and the intersection of fashion and gender with social change.
