Biography

Alvin Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is a clinical psychologist focusing on risk and protective factors for boys and the conditions that imperil positive outcomes. His research exists at the intersection of positive child and youth development and father involvement. His work explores ethnic identity, father-son engagement, mental health of men and boys, and the specific risks and protections for Black children and youth, particularly boys. Thomas aims to influence fatherhood policy to highlight the efficacy of father involvement for Black underrepresented families in varying contexts. He is currently researching gaps in diversity training related to father (non-resident) involvement in service provision and the implications for outcomes relating to aggressive behavior and police interactions among Black youth. Thomas has received numerous awards, including the Rackham International Student Fellowship and Patricia Gurin Research Award, and has contributed to various academic publications in the field.
