Dr. André De Quadros

Biography

André de Quadros is a music educator, conductor, ethnomusicologist, writer, and human rights activist who has conducted research in forty countries. His professional work spans diverse settings, including projects in prisons, peacebuilding initiatives, and psychosocial rehabilitation for refugees and asylum seekers. De Quadros leads several choirs, such as Common Ground Voices and the Manado State University Choir, and has engaged in significant conducting roles with orchestras and choral groups around the world. Committed to justice and equity, he has co-directed various choral festivals and community outreach initiatives that foster understanding among different cultural communities. He has worked extensively in Massachusetts prisons and has developed the 'Empowering Song' approach, promoting storytelling through music and poetry in incarcerated settings. He is the founding director of the Music Research and Composition Network and has edited and authored numerous influential books and articles related to music education. De Quadros has held several leadership positions at Boston University, where he served as Director of the School of Music, and has been involved with various academic appointments and initiatives focused on social justice and community engagement in the arts.
