Professor Dr. Andrew Markham

Biography

Andrew Markham is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. He is a Governing Body Fellow at Kellogg College. His research interests focus on sensors and signal processing, particularly within the context of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). He leads a large group of researchers and students investigating the tracking and localization of people, animals, and objects, especially in environments where technologies like GPS fail, such as underground or indoors. Markham's work is characterized by a cross-disciplinary approach, collaborating with colleagues across various fields. More recently, his research has shifted towards data-driven methods and physics-informed approaches to learning from noisy sensor data. He also has significant interests in AI applications for environmental management, contributing to the Intelligent Earth Centre for Doctoral Training. Markham earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, in 2008, focusing on the design and implementation of a wildlife tracking system using heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. He held a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the same department from 2008 to 2012 before becoming an Associate Professor in 2013 and was awarded the title of full Professor in 2021.
