Biography

Andrew Simpson has a rich history of working in museum curation and higher education. He previously served as a curator at Macquarie University and the University of Queensland, where he was instrumental in securing internal research funding and developing policy proposals for museum collections. He initiated and developed undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in Museum Studies at Macquarie University, which sought to provide an alternative career path for students interested in art history and cultural heritage. These programs produced graduates who have significantly contributed to the understanding of science museum practices and traditional historical and cultural studies over their decade-long run. Since leaving full-time employment in 2014, Andrew has engaged in various paid and voluntary projects in higher education and the heritage sector, including his current role at the Macquarie University Art Gallery. His research interests encompass the role of museums in society, particularly university museums and museum education, as well as natural history and public understanding of science. He retains interests rooted in his PhD studies in Paleozoic geology, focusing particularly on conodont biostratigraphy and taxonomy.
