Violinist Ani Kavafian enjoys a prolific career as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. She has performed virtually with America’s leading orchestras in major venues across the country, premiered and recorded a number of works, and has been featured on network and PBS television music specials. Kavafian tours internationally as an artist-member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and frequently appears in performances with her sister, violinist and violist Ida Kavafian. At Yale, Kavafian teaches studio graduate-level violin students, coaches chamber ensembles, and performs in Yale’s Faculty Artist Series and New York series. She regularly teaches and performs at music festivals, including the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival/Yale Summer School of Music, Heifetz International Institute, and Sarasota Music Festival. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, with Armenian heritage, Kavafian began piano lessons at age 3 and switched to studying violin at age 9 in the United States with Ara Zerounian and later Mischa Mischakoff. She completed her violin studies at the Juilliard School under Ivan Galamian, earning a Master of Music degree with the highest honors. She plays a 1736 Muir McKenzie Stradivarius violin and has performed with numerous orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
