My research explores constructions of perceptions of body projects and ideals in contemporary societies, with a particular focus on the cosmetic procedures industry. In 2021, I published my book "Discourses of Perfection," which analyzes the marketing of cosmetic procedures in the UK and gendered perceptions within the cosmetics industry. Currently, I focus on patient experiences and complications related to cosmetic procedures and adolescents' perceptions of body ideals in relation to these procedures. I am the academic lead of the Filtering Reality project, which employs a co-creation approach to develop a media literacy program related to body image for children. In 2020, I co-established an interdisciplinary group called the Expertise Group on Cosmetic Interventions, where I serve as chair. This group comprises medical, consumer, and academic experts aimed at achieving insights into the cosmetic surgery industry in the Netherlands through qualitative and quantitative research.
