Dr. Artemis Leontis

Biography

Artemis Leontis is the C. P. Cavafy Professor of Modern Greek Studies and a Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. With a Ph.D. in Comparative Studies from Ohio State University, she specializes in Modern Greek Studies, examining Greek language, migrations, and ethnic identities. Leontis's work critically engages with the historical and cultural narratives of Greece, particularly post-independence from the Ottoman Empire in the 1820s. Her notable publications include 'Topographies of Hellenism: Mapping the Homeland', which investigates Greekness and its representations in literature and culture, as well as 'Eva Palmer Sikelianos: Life Ruins', a biography that recovers the life of the American visionary who lived in Greece during the early 20th century. Since joining the University of Michigan in 1999, Leontis has taught various courses in Classical Studies and Comparative Literature, and has developed innovative projects that bridge academic research with public engagement, such as digital archives and museum exhibitions. Her research areas encompass Classical Reception Studies, travel writing, gender studies, and critical heritage studies, making significant contributions to the understanding of modern Greek identity and culture.
