Biography

Åsa Bergman is an Associate Professor in the Aesthetics Unit at the University of Gothenburg, specializing in Musicology and Cultural Studies. She completed her doctoral dissertation in 2009, titled "Growing Music: Young People’s Use of Music in School and Leisure Time," which involved a longitudinal ethnographical study at a secondary school in Gothenburg. Her current research project, funded by the Swedish Research Council, aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of classical music as a contemporary cultural phenomenon influenced by media. In this project, she examines how representations of classical music are constructed through marketing strategies employed by concert institutions. Since her dissertation, Åsa has taught and supervised various courses in Musicology and Cultural Sciences. She has been instrumental in course development across undergraduate and advanced levels, including doctoral supervision. Her research interests include media representation of music, gender studies within music, and the social implications of music education, all of which align with her extensive publication record in these areas.
