Biography

Asha Rao is an Instructional Professor and Assistant Head of Academic Affairs in the Department of Biology at Texas A&M University, where she has been a faculty member since 2011. Her research interests focus on enhancing student learning and success through innovative teaching strategies and the integration of technology in the classroom. Rao has been actively involved in numerous NSF-funded projects aimed at improving STEM education and addressing issues faced by minoritized students in STEM fields. She is a recipient of several teaching awards, including the Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence Award, and has been recognized for her leadership in diversity and equity initiatives within the College of Science. Rao holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sericulture from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, India, and both a Master's and a Ph.D. in Entomology from Texas A&M University. Her pedagogical approach emphasizes hands-on learning experiences and the application of biological concepts to real-world challenges. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she has contributed to the development of course materials and instructional resources aimed at improving educational outcomes in gateway biology courses. Rao continues to seek innovative ways to foster student engagement and support diverse learning needs in higher education settings.
