Biography

Ava Becker is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. Her research interests focus on the intersections of language, migration, and trauma, specifically exploring the lived experiences of individuals and communities. She has conducted graduate research on intergenerational socialization and the transmission of cultural knowledge within the Chilean-Canadian diaspora. Currently, she examines the use of visual and aural modes to investigate themes of intergenerational trauma and memory within language ideology. Becker serves as the elected Secretary for the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics and leads various research projects related to trauma-informed plurilingual pedagogies and educational contexts. She teaches a required course for the secondary education program, ensuring preservice teachers develop critical awareness of language in educational settings, particularly in support of emergent bilingual and multilingual students. Becker is currently accepting doctoral students interested in research topics such as plurilingualism, language socialization, and mental health in education.
