Dr. Averil Grieve

Biography

Averil Grieve is a senior lecturer in the Communication Health Professions Education Unit at Monash University. She provides cultural language support for students during placements within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Her work involves training academic staff and field educators in transcultural teaching practices and advising on bilingual education, focusing on additional languages and providing external consultations for multicultural educational settings. Averil holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Melbourne University and a Master's degree in Cross-Cultural Communication from the University of Sydney. She serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Academic Language Learning and is actively involved in research projects aimed at enhancing language acquisition in health professions education. Her work emphasizes scaffolded language learning and the effective design of tertiary curricula to meet the needs of international students, including the training of placement supervisors. Additionally, Averil's contributions to the field include workshops on intercultural communication and the developed methodologies for transcultural learning.
