Biography

Barry Freeman is an Associate Professor in Theatre Performance at the University of Toronto Scarborough and holds a cross-appointment in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. His recent works include authoring 'Staging Strangers: Theatre & Global Ethics' (2017) and co-editing 'Defence Theatre: Practices and Social Interventions' (2016). Barry has contributed to the Canadian Theatre Review as an Associate Editor, overseeing several special issues and publishing numerous articles that reflect on contemporary Canadian theatre. His research interests focus on the pedagogy of theatre education, intersecting themes of ethics and interculturalism. Notably, he co-leads the PLEDGE Project, aimed at enhancing gender equity in theatre productions across Canada. Barry is committed to promoting open-access resources for theatre educators and has received several internal grants to support his ongoing research projects in performance history and the ethics of theatre education.
