Biography

Billy K Kahora is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Professional Writing at the University of Bristol. His work includes a short story collection titled Cape Cod Bicycle War Youthful Follies, released in 2019, and a non-fiction book titled True Story David Munyakei, published in 2012. He has also produced notable short fiction and creative non-fiction in prestigious publications such as Chimurenga, McSweeney’s, Granta Online, Internazionale, and Vanity Fair. Kahora's story Urban Zoning was shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Literature in 2012, and his work Gorilla’s Apprentice received recognition in 2014. He co-wrote the screenplay for the film Soul Boy and contributed to Nairobi Half Life, which won Kalasha awards and was featured in European film festivals. As Managing Editor of Kwani Trust, he edited seven issues of the Kwani journal and has played a significant role in the writing community as a contributing editor for Chimurenga Chronic. His research interests encompass narrative voice and multi-vocality in novels, creative writing pedagogies, and depictions of mental health in fiction. Kahora curated the Kwani Litfest Writers Conversation in 2015 and has actively participated in various literary activities and workshops.
