Dr. Birgit Pfau Effinger

Biography

Birgit Pfau-Effinger is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Hamburg, specializing in Cultural Institutional Change. She held the position until 2023 and has engaged in numerous national and international research initiatives. Pfau-Effinger served as a Principal Investigator on the European ANR research project AURELIA, focusing on autonomy regimes in long-term care, involving collaboration with various international institutions. She has also been a Scientific Co-Director at the Research Centre of Globalization and Governance (CGG) and has contributed significantly to the fields of social policy, gender studies, and family sociology. Her acclaimed works include analyses on welfare state dynamics and cultural influences on familial relationships, with publications in prestigious academic journals. Pfau-Effinger has been recognized for her contributions to research and was awarded the title of Honorary Professor at the University of Southern Denmark from 2011 to 2014. Her editorial roles include co-editor of the Journal Family Policy and member of the board for various social policy networks.
