Brendan completed nurse training as a Registered General Nurse in Birmingham in September 1989, where he worked in clinical practice for 12 years across a variety of areas including General Critical Care, Coronary Care/Cardiology, and Emergency Medical Admissions. He has specialized experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neuro-Surgery, and General Surgery, and was involved in setting up a nurse-led pre-admission clinic in a paediatric cardiac surgery ward. Transitioning to academic roles, Brendan joined Coventry University in 2002, where he spent 21 years in the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, holding positions such as Course Director for the BSc Nursing Studies for International Nurses and module leader for Master’s level research modules. He served as Faculty Lead for Disability & Learning Support and previously chaired the Community Practice Inclusive Curriculum. Brendan has also taught on Undergraduate Nursing programmes in Hong Kong as part of international partnerships and has been the course leader for a CPD Critical Care nursing course for 16 years, contributing to modules for military nurses prior to deployment to Afghanistan. He earned his PhD from the University of Birmingham in 2018, and his research interests include dyslexia and neurodiversity in nursing and healthcare professions, as well as inclusivity in recognizing signs and symptoms of sepsis among healthcare professionals.
