Biography

Bret Hoag is a lecturer at the University of Michigan and a special lecturer of guitar at Oakland University. He is a regular solo performer specializing in new music, having premiered works by composers such as P.Q. Phan, Anthony Lanman, Rafael Hernandez, Mitsuhito Ogino, Terry Herald, Brian Hulse, and John Hall. Besides solo engagements, Bret performs in chamber settings and has collaborated with notable musicians including flutist Jeffery Zook, clarinetist George Stoffan, tenor Drake Dantzler, soprano Kelly Holst, and violinist Davis Brooks. At Oakland University, he directs the Oakland University Guitar Ensemble, teaches guitar classes for non-majors, and maintains an active studio for guitar majors. His teaching includes courses intended for guitar majors, such as Guitar Pedagogy and Guitar Literature, in addition to History of Rock and Roll. At the University of Michigan, Bret teaches guitar classes and conducts the guitar ensemble. He holds a bachelor's degree in guitar performance from Oberlin Conservatory and a master's degree in guitar performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Previously, he held a full-time position at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) as the coordinator for guitar and directed the IUPUI Guitar Ensemble, in addition to teaching applied guitar at the University of Indianapolis.
