Biography

Brian Lewis is an exceptionally gifted and charismatic artist, recognized as one of the finest violinists in the concert scene today. He has been praised for his honest virtuosity, which is said to serve the music supremely. Mr. Lewis has concertized and taught around the world, dedicating himself to the legacy of Shin’ichi Suzuki and Dorothy DeLay. His acclaimed performances include concerto debuts at New York's Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, as well as performances with prestigious orchestras including the Orchestra St. Luke’s and the London Symphony Orchestra. Over his career, he has released six CDs, showcasing his collaborations with eminent composers like Leonard Bernstein and Michael McLean. Mr. Lewis began his violin studies at age four with the Ottawa Suzuki Strings program and traveled to Japan to study with Dr. Suzuki. He holds both Bachelor and Master degrees from the Juilliard School, where he studied under renowned pedagogue Dorothy DeLay. In addition to his teaching duties at the University of Texas at Austin, where he holds the David Mary Winton Green Chair in String Performance Pedagogy, he also serves as the Artistic Director of the Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies at Juilliard and the Young Artists Program in Fairbanks, AK. His previous positions include Class ’57 Visiting Professor at Yale University and Visiting Professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
