Dr. Brianna Kennedy

Biography

Brianna L. Kennedy is a Professor of Education and Joint Director of the Centre for Transformative Change in Schools (CenTCS) at the University of Glasgow. She came to academia after teaching in a middle school within the Los Angeles Unified School District, California, where she faced the challenges of meeting the needs of a mostly immigrant population of students. She completed her PhD at the University of Southern California, focusing on how teachers can better support marginalized students. Professor Kennedy has also served on faculties at the University of Florida and Utrecht University, where she prepared teachers and engaged educators in improving their professional practice through various bachelor, master, and doctoral programs. Her research interests center on the marginalization and belonging of students from nondominant social backgrounds, particularly in the context of educational policy and classroom teaching. As a middle school teacher, she emphasizes the importance of bridging theory and practice, developing inquiries into how educators can understand, learn, enact, and reflect on issues of marginalization and belonging. She advocates for social justice in education, aiming to reimagine and transform schooling for all students.
