Biography

Catherine Paterson is a lecturer whose work focuses on child culture, community art practices, and participatory design. She completed her education in Fine Art in South Africa before moving to Sweden to study Child Culture Design, graduating in 2019. Catherine founded a child culture design studio, Lekkontoret (the Play Office), in 2020, where she collaborates with public and private institutions in Sweden on public art and participatory design projects. Her aims include involving children in the design process through playful methods that facilitate communication and expression across age groups. She also works with the Gothenburg Contemporary Art Museum’s pedagogical department, developing child workshops and outreach projects. Currently, she is involved in an interactive, digital child culture plan focusing on participatory design for teenagers and children in Falkenberg Municipality. As a relatively recent graduate and expat, Catherine has a unique understanding of the needs and concerns of international students.
