Dr. Cecilia Björck

Biography

Cecilia Björck works as a senior lecturer, focusing on youth research in the Department of Education, Communication and Learning at the University of Gothenburg. With a background in music education, she has experience teaching at primary, secondary, college, and university levels. In 2011, she defended her PhD thesis titled "Claiming Space: Discourses on Gender, Popular Music, Social Change," which examines the expression "to claim space" and its relevance to discussions on gender equality within the music sector. Her research interests include the meaning-making processes in young people's engagements with popular culture, particularly concerning gender, equality, and normalization. Currently, she is involved in research projects exploring young Swedes' interests in Eastern Asian popular culture, the role of music organizations in promoting gender equality, and the complexities within gender equality in jazz music. Her work has been published in various academic journals and contributions to international conferences, focusing on themes like music, gender, and social change.
