Dr. Charles Davis Iii

Biography

Charles H.F. Davis III is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan's Marsal Family School of Education. His research and teaching broadly focus on issues of race, racism, systems of oppression, and structures of domination in U.S. higher education within social contexts. His current ethnographic work utilizes traditional visual methods to explore how Black campus community activists build, exercise, and mobilize political power to drive social and institutional change. Davis has received funding and support from notable organizations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the National Academy of Education. In addition to publishing in top peer-reviewed academic journals, he co-edited a book on student activism, politics, and campus climate in higher education, and has produced educational documentaries addressing structural barriers facing Black youth in education. His work has been featured in leading national news outlets and has been cited in Supreme Court briefs related to significant cases in education equity. Davis has been honored as an Emerging Scholar by Diverse Issues in Higher Education and was awarded the prestigious National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship. Before joining the University of Michigan, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California, where he helped launch two national research centers advancing racial equity in education.
