Dr. Christine Williams

Biography

Christine L. Williams is a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, holding the Elsie & Stanley E. (Skinny) Adams, Sr., Centennial Professorship in the College of Liberal Arts. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on gender, race, and class inequalities in the workplace, utilizing qualitative research methods and theoretical frameworks. Williams authored and edited several significant works, including 'Inside Toyland: Working, Shopping, Social Inequality,' which addresses social inequalities within consumer culture. She has also published 'Gaslighted: Oil and Gas Industry Shortchanges Women Scientists,' discussing the enduring gender disparities in the male-dominated oil and gas sector. Williams is the recipient of the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award for her scholarly work on women's roles in society and the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Career Award for her contributions to sociology and organizations. She served as the 111th President of the American Sociological Association in 2020. Williams teaches courses in gender, labor, and qualitative research methods, and has chaired the Department of Sociology from 2010 to 2014.
