Biography

Professor Claudia Kost is an accomplished scholar in the field of Applied Linguistics, with a focus on teaching at the University of Alberta since 2003. She holds a Master's degree in American Studies, Political Sciences, and German Literature from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, as well as a Master's in Foreign Language Education from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in Language Acquisition Teaching from the University of Arizona. Her research interests encompass a variety of areas including computer-mediated communication, teacher training, curriculum development, and foreign language pedagogy. Kost has co-authored a cultural history of Germany titled 'Ekstase und Elend. Deutsche Kulturgeschichte 1900 bis heute,' which was published in 2020 and presents an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the intersection of politics, social issues, and cultural history in relation to underrepresented groups. She has also developed innovative Open Educational Resources for language learning, including the first-year German e-textbook 'Willkommen: Deutsch für alle' and its follow-up volume for second-year learners, both designed to enhance the teaching and learning experiences in German language courses. Her teaching encompasses a wide range of German language courses, including applied linguistics, where she supervises students at the Honors, Master's, and Ph.D. levels.
