Biography

Claudia Maria Passos Ferreira is an Assistant Professor in Bioethics at the New York University School of Global Public Health. She studied psychology at the Rio de Janeiro State University, where she earned her Master's degree and completed her PhD program in Human Sciences, Health Sciences, and Public Health. Claudia's academic journey led her to obtain a PhD in Philosophy from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Her research spans philosophy, psychology, and neuroethics, with a focus on cross-cultural research in moral development and social cognition, examining themes such as empathy, fairness, ownership, and intersubjectivity. Claudia has published extensively, including a book on Freud and mental causation. Her current research interests include the development of consciousness and theories surrounding infant and machine consciousness, along with ethical implications in these fields. Before her tenure at NYU, she served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the State University of Rio de Janeiro, working on projects about ethics in biotechnologies and the ecological mind. Claudia has also received a Residency Scholarship from the Brazilian Health Ministry and has clinical experience as a psychologist in both private practice and public hospitals in Brazil.
