Biography

Claudia Ruitenberg was born and raised in the Netherlands. She moved to Canada in 1987 to attend the Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific on Vancouver Island and returned in 2000 for her doctoral studies at Simon Fraser University. Currently, she resides on Salt Spring Island. Ruitenberg's academic tenure at the University of British Columbia (UBC) includes roles as Academic Director of UBC Vantage College from 2017 to 2019, and she served as the President of the Canadian Philosophy of Education Society from 2016 to 2019. Additionally, she was awarded a Scholar in the Centre for Health Education Scholarship from 2013 to 2017. In March 2014, she was featured in an audio-interview in the PIPEline series, where she discussed her teaching philosophy and scholarly work. Her research interests have increasingly shifted towards permaculture and ecological responses to the climate crisis.
