Cynthia J. Atman is a Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington, where she is also the founding director of the Center for Engineering Learning & Teaching (CELT) and the inaugural holder of the Mitchell T. & Lella Blanche Bowie Endowed Chair. Her research focuses on design expertise and engineering education, particularly the use of reflection in supporting learning. Atman served as the director of the NSF-funded Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education from 2003 to 2010 and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society for Engineering Education. She earned her Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. Atman's work includes numerous publications on design processes and reflective practices in engineering education, as well as selected invited talks and keynote presentations that emphasize the importance of design awareness.
