Cynthia LaBrake received her BS in Chemistry Honors from West Virginia University in 1987 and her PhD in Biophysical Chemistry from Loyola University Chicago in 1992. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Loyola, she relocated her family to Austin in 1993 and began teaching at the University of Texas at Austin in 1996. Cynthia is actively involved in curriculum reform efforts within the College of Natural Sciences. She co-created the Hands on Science Teaching program, developed the ChemBridge dual high school credit course, and worked on a web-based general chemistry course. Additionally, she has been integral in transforming general chemistry courses, including the creation of a learning assistant training course and a curriculum redesign project in the Department of Molecular Biosciences. Cynthia shares her teaching expertise through various campus service roles, including the Provost Teaching Fellows program and as the inaugural chair of the Badging Review Board. Her interests include active learning, utilizing undergraduate course assistants to facilitate experiential learning, program development, assessment, and curricular reform.
