Biography

Dana Osborne joined the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in 2016 as an Associate Professor and is a linguistic anthropologist. Her research focuses on understanding how speakers in the Philippines engage with language contact and change in light of over 450 years of colonial and imperial occupation, with a special focus on the 20th century. Through historical and contemporary analyses of language, her work traces the archaeology of the large-scale discourses forged in the crucible of a burgeoning Philippine nation. Key themes in her research include multilingualism, code-mixing and code-switching, and the political use of language. Dr. Osborne teaches courses in methods, anthropological theory, linguistics, and linguistic anthropology, and is currently accepting graduate students at the MA and PhD levels who have interests in language, linguistics, and discourse analysis. She encourages undergraduates to explore research opportunities and work as research assistants.
