Biography

Daniel Pinilla, D.M.A., is a Colombian-born guitarist who has released albums including Intuiciones (FLD, 2011) and Atrás (2011). His original works have garnered significant critical acclaim. With over 10 years of performance, recording, and teaching experience, he has been active in both the U.S. and Latin America. His performance credits include the Colombian National Symphony, the seven-time Grammy® nominated UNT O’Clock Lab Band, and collaborations with prominent Latin American singer Carlos Rivera. His composition 'Not Portrait’, co-created with trumpeter Juan Chaves, was recognized with the DownBeat Magazine 40th anniversary Students Award for Small Ensemble Composition. Pinilla is dedicated to social impact initiatives in Colombia through music, founding the non-profit 'You Art Important' in 2014 to focus on music education for children in post-conflict areas. He received the Sherman/Barsanti Inspiration Award for his efforts in music workshops. Pinilla has also been awarded the Jóvenes Talentos scholarship by the Colombian government to pursue a Master’s Degree in jazz studies, and has taught at various institutions in Bogotá before his tenure at UNT where he directed guitar ensembles and taught jazz guitar lessons. He has presented his scholarly work at various conferences in both the U.S. and Colombia.
