Biography

Dr. Daniel Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Guelph, where he has been a faculty member since 1989. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1987 and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington prior to joining Guelph. Dr. Thomas has extensive research experience in nanotechnology, particularly focusing on the dimensions of materials at the nanoscale and their resulting unusual characteristics, such as modified strength, resilience, friction, and electrical optical properties. His work includes a procedure for photochemically etching silicon to produce patterned fluorescing features for applications in display technology. Additionally, he has made significant contributions to the development of solid oxide fuel cells and has a strong interest in science education, including the ways students learn in physical sciences. He has been recognized with grants from the Ontario Centres of Excellence and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, as well as holding leadership roles within various scientific organizations.
