Biography

David investigates relationship work, organizations, and self-employed individuals, primarily context-independent professionals and consultants using theoretical lenses such as commitment, liminality, professional work, and intellectual capital. He has published in journals like Human Resource Management Journal and Organization Studies and presented papers at international conferences such as the Academy of Management Annual Meeting, where he won a paper award, and the European Group for Organizational Studies Colloquiums. David is also an active member of the Centre for Research on Self-Employment (CRSE) based in London. His current research focuses on the relationship between the HR profession and self-employment, including projects funded by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the SBS Small Grant. Additionally, he leads modules such as MANG1049 on contemporary work and MANG2104, which provides a comprehensive view of consulting. David holds a PhD in Management from the University of Bath, where he also gained an MSc in Management, and he read History and Sociology at the University of Warwick before joining the University of Southampton as an Associate Professor. He has a background as a commissioned officer in the Royal Air Force and has served in civilian roles within the Avon and Somerset Police.
