Dr. David Gier

Biography

David Gier is the Dean and Paul C. Boylan Collegiate Professor at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan. He began his career in academia at the University of Iowa, where he served as the Director of the School of Music and was appointed the inaugural Erich Funke Professor. During his tenure, Gier demonstrated leadership in navigating challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic by ensuring the continuation of safe in-person learning and performance opportunities. He has facilitated the hiring of new faculty and the development of innovative academic programs, including new doctoral degrees and minors. Gier has significantly contributed to fundraising efforts, overseeing the largest campaign in the history of SMTD, aimed at improving student success. With experience as a trombone soloist, he has performed extensively and is recognized nationally for his teaching. His students have achieved notable success in various prestigious competitions and professional orchestras. Gier holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Yale University, culminating in a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1992.
