Biography

David Gier is the Dean and Paul C. Boylan Collegiate Professor at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan. He began his career in academia at the University of Iowa, where he served as the Director of the School of Music and was appointed the inaugural Erich Funke Professor. During his tenure, Gier demonstrated leadership in navigating challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic by ensuring the continuation of safe in-person learning and performance opportunities. His students have achieved notable success in various prestigious competitions and professional orchestras. Gier holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Yale University, culminating in a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1992.
