Biography

David Lobell is the Benjamin M. Page Professor and the Gloria and Richard Kushel Director of the Center on Food Security and the Environment at Stanford University. He is a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. His research focuses on the interactions between agricultural production, food security, and environmental factors, with an emphasis on the impacts of climate change on crop systems. Lobell was a lead author for the food chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fifth Assessment Report and has developed new methodologies for measuring progress toward sustainable development goals in agriculture. His honors include the Macelwane Medal from the American Geophysical Union, a MacArthur Fellowship, and election to the National Academy of Sciences. He holds a PhD in Geological and Environmental Sciences from Stanford and an Sc.B. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University.
