David Purpura joined the Purdue University faculty in fall 2012 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Institute of Education Sciences at the University of Illinois. He earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University in 2010. His research primarily focuses on understanding how young children from preschool to third grade learn mathematical concepts and identify children at risk of mathematical difficulties in order to provide early interventions. Currently, his work emphasizes developing and evaluating interventions that utilize picture books and games to enhance preschool children's early mathematics skills, paying particular attention to dual language learners. Over the years, he has collaborated with a professional author-illustrator to create a series of picture books designed to integrate math concepts into intervention studies, with support from prominent organizations such as the Heising-Simons Foundation and the National Science Foundation. Purpura's lab examines the influence of home and school contexts on mathematics development among diverse populations during early childhood.
