Dr. Dawn Smith

Biography

Dawn Smith is an Indigenous educator and scholar from the Nuu-chah-nulth nation. She focuses on Nuu-chah-nulth self-determination and nature knowledge transmission. Currently, she holds a three-year appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Indigenous Education, Curriculum & Instruction office at the University of Victoria. Dawn works closely with Indigenous communities engaged in renewable energy projects, emphasizing community development. Through her role, she collaborates with Nuu-chah-nulth non-profits to advance family cultural teachings, art, and language. Her expertise includes Indigenous education, curriculum development, Indigenous governance worldviews, and Indigenous research. Smith is invested in promoting Indigenous knowledge pedagogy and addressing climate change issues through education.
