Dr. Deborah Berke

Biography

Deborah Berke, FAIA, LEED AP, is an architect and educator, serving as the Edward P. Bass Dean and J.M. Hoppin Professor at Yale School of Architecture. She is the founder of the New York-based architecture firm TenBerke and has contributed to a number of significant projects, including the Residential Colleges at Princeton University and the Cummins Indy Distribution Headquarters. Acknowledged for her commitment to sustainability and community, she has received several honors, including the Topaz Medallion for excellence in architectural education and the inaugural Berkeley-Rupp Prize from the University of California at Berkeley, which celebrates women in the profession. In 2017, her firm received the National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Beyond her architectural practice, Berke is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Academy of Design, and serves on the jury for the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She is also a board member of the James Howell Foundation and an advisor to the Norman Foster Foundation. Berke holds degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and The City University of New York, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005.
