Biography

Deborah Stipek is the Judy Koch Professor of Education, Emerita, at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Her research focuses on early childhood education, particularly in the area of math motivation for young children. Stipek has served on the Board of Children, Youth, and Families for the National Research Council and has chaired the committee aimed at increasing high school students' engagement and motivation to learn. Before her tenure at Stanford, she was a professor at UCLA, where she was the Director of the Corinne Seeds University Elementary School and worked with the Urban Education Studies Center. Stipek has held significant roles including the Peter E. Haas Faculty Director at the Haas Center for Public Service and has been involved in multiple advisory boards and research networks including the Heising-Simons Development Research Early Math Education Network. She holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology from Yale University and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Washington.
