Biography

Dee Tomic is a clinically trained epidemiologist whose research is shaping national and international public health policy, particularly in the areas of occupational health, chronic disease, and workplace equity. As a Research Fellow at the Monash Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health (MonCOEH), Dee coordinates the Masters unit MPH5309 Occupational Health and Safety. After completing medical training at Monash and working with the Boston Consulting Group on major state and federal COVID-19 response initiatives, Dee earned a PhD in diabetes epidemiology at the Baker Institute in 2023, producing globally influential work including a landmark review on emerging diabetes complications published in Nature Reviews Endocrinology and a multinational life-expectancy study in type 2 diabetes in Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. Dee's research has been widely cited and contributed to clinical guidelines, leading to participation in the International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas Committee. Dee's work has also been pivotal in legislating against artificial stone in Australia and addressing the economic burden of silicosis among workers. Notably, Dee has received the David Goddard Paper Award from the Australian and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine in 2025 for research on asthma. Dee's research streams include Diabetes Work and LGBTQ+ Workers, with significant competitive funding exceeding $1.75 million for various initiatives, including the development of Australia's National Silicosis Guidelines. Dee has authored 25 peer-reviewed publications, accrued over 1,500 citations, and is dedicated to bridging clinical medicine, epidemiology, and public policy.
