Biography

Dhiraj Murthy is a Professor in the School of Journalism and Media at the Moody College of Communication, University of Texas at Austin. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Cambridge. His research interests include digital research methods, race/ethnicity, qualitative and mixed methods, big data quantitative analysis, and community and virtual organizations. Murthy has edited three journal special issues and authored approximately 80 articles, book chapters, and papers. He is the author of the scholarly book 'Twitter,' with its second edition published by Polity Press in 2018. Murthy's research has received funding from notable institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the National Science Foundation, as well as from the Good Systems initiative at the University of Texas at Austin. He founded and directs the Computational Media Lab at UT Austin, which comprises about 20 graduate and undergraduate students along with high school interns. Additionally, he serves as a co-editor for the high-impact journal 'Big Data & Society' and has chaired or co-chaired international conferences. Murthy is also involved with the advisory board of MediaWell, an initiative of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC).
