Biography

Dominik Bonatz is a full professor specializing in Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology at Freie Universität Berlin, where he has served since 2003. He received his PhD in Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology from Freie Universität Berlin in 1997, following his Master's degree in the same field in 1993 from Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität Frankfurt Main. His research focuses on the visual arts of the Ancient Near East, with particular attention to the cognitive processes expressed in artistic designs and the relationship between individuals, communities, and material culture. Bonatz has engaged in significant archaeological fieldwork across Syria and Lebanon and currently leads projects in Jordan and Indonesia. He has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and is active in international conferences and workshops, having presented extensively on topics related to his research. Fluent in German and English, along with other languages, he has also contributed to various publications and edited works in his field.
