Dr. Douglas Gleddie

Biography

Douglas Gleddie is a professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, specializing in Elementary Education and Physical Education. His research focuses on qualitative methodologies, incorporating hermeneutics, case studies, interpretive, and narrative inquiries to explore the experiences of pre-service teachers in physical education. He is influenced by Dewey’s experiential framework, emphasizing the importance of movement and joy in physical education. Over his 29-year career in education, he has developed a strong belief in the necessity of physical movement for children and adults, advocating for physical education as a vital part of holistic education. Gleddie has participated in research examining healthy school communities and the continuous improvement in physical education teacher education. He has co-authored publications on various topics in physical education and has secured grants to support his research in the field.
