Biography

Ed Brockenbrough is an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) in Philadelphia, PA. He teaches courses on diversity and social justice issues in education aimed at doctoral students and future K–12 educators. His research focuses on negotiations of identity, pedagogy, and power within urban educational spaces, particularly through the lenses of Black masculinity studies and queer color critique. His projects include an ethnographic study of HIV/AIDS community-based agencies functioning as pedagogical spaces for Black queer youth. Brockenbrough is also involved in research on sexuality education experiences of queer Gen-Zers in the United States. His work has appeared in various peer-reviewed journals and edited collections, and he is the author of several books, including "Black Men Teaching in Urban Schools: Reassessing Masculinity" and "Learning Black Queer: Understanding Educational Experiences of Black LGBTQ+ Youth." Prior to joining Penn GSE, he was a faculty member at the University of Rochester’s Warner Graduate School of Education, where he prepared urban teachers and directed the Urban Teaching and Leadership program. Additionally, Brockenbrough has extensive experience in professional development focused on LGBTQ+ issues in education and has served on boards of community organizations advocating for queer communities of color.
