Biography

Elaine Jing Zhao is an Associate Professor at the School of the Arts and Media, University of New South Wales, Sydney. Her research focuses on cultural production, industry transformations, and governance challenges within the digital media economy. Elaine is especially interested in the social, cultural, and economic implications of digital technologies and platforms in transitional China and its borders. She has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals such as New Media Society and Cultural Studies, covering topics like communication media policy, cultural production, creative labour, and media globalization. As the Chief Investigator for an Australia Research Council-funded Discovery Project, she examines the rise of digital platforms in China and their internationalization in the Asia-Pacific region. Additionally, she is involved in a project funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China that investigates digital media cultural innovation in China. Elaine has served on the editorial board of Taylor & Francis' journal Communication Research Practice and has engaged with various academic projects concerning media communication and cultural studies.
