Biography

Elizabeth 'Biz' Nijdam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Her areas of expertise include language acquisition, visual materials, new media, representation in history, and comics. Currently, she is completing a book manuscript titled 'Graphic Historiography: East German History & Memory Comics Graphic Novels,' published by Ohio State University Press. Biz's teaching and research interests intersect various academic fields including forced migration, Indigenous studies, and migration studies within a European context. She actively participates in academic communities, sitting on the Executive Committee of the International Comic Arts Forum and serving as Director of the Comics Studies Cluster at UBC’s Public Humanities Hub. Additionally, she acknowledges the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations where she lives and works.
