Biography

Eric Jennings is a leading authority in modern French colonial history and the study of France and the Francophonie. His publications in Canada’s official languages have contributed to the globalizing and de-centering of history regarding France, spanned across five continents through extensive archival research. His notable books include "Vichy Tropics" (Stanford), "Curing Colonizers" (Duke), "Imperial Heights" (University of California Press), "Free French Africa during World War II" (Cambridge), and "Escape from Vichy: A Refugee Exodus from the French Caribbean" (Harvard). His works include roughly fifty refereed chapters and articles that examine histories spanning France, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, Africa, and the Caribbean. Jennings has also contributed to edited volumes and has co-edited "L’Empire colonial sous Vichy" (Odile Jacob). He is currently researching the history of vanilla as a global commodity. Jennings has received several prestigious accolades including the Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014 and various book prizes such as the Gilbert Chinard, Alf Heggoy, Prix des Ambassadeurs, and the Prix Fetkann. He was made chevalier of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 2010 and became a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2019.
