Dr. Eric Mlyn

Biography

Eric J Mlyn is a Lecturer at the Sanford School of Public Policy and a Distinguished Faculty Fellow at the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 1991. His academic career includes notable roles such as the founding Executive Director of DukeEngage and Assistant Vice Provost for Civic Engagement. Mlyn has also served on the Political Science faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he engaged in research and teaching focused on the intersection of higher education and democracy. He leads the Kenan Democracy Project which examines contemporary threats to academic freedom and university governance. A dedicated advocate for political and civic engagement among undergraduates, Mlyn holds a BA in Political Science from Tufts University. His research interests are reflected in his publications, which include studies on international security and the role of state interests in democratic governance. In 2019, he was a visiting scholar at Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University.
