Biography

Erica Saldivar Garcia is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Program Director in TESOL, Bilingual, and World Language Education at NYU Steinhardt. Her research focuses on bilingualism, biliteracy, multilingual youth, raciolinguistic literacy ideologies, and language education policy. The work of Dr. Saldivar Garcia explores concepts of proficiency as applied to bilingual Latinx students in world heritage language courses. In her teaching praxis, she emphasizes supporting pre-service and in-service teachers in creating transformational learning experiences for multilingual learners. Furthermore, Dr. Saldivar Garcia co-leads projects aimed at enhancing multilingual and multicultural awareness within Teacher Education programs. Her leadership experience includes developing world language and bilingual programming for multilingual students. Her doctoral research was recognized with the American Education Research Association Bilingual Education Research Special Interest Group's 2020 Outstanding Dissertation Award (1st Place). Dr. Saldivar Garcia earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Spanish from Wellesley College, a Master of Science in Education, and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.
