Biography

Erik Mueggler is the Katherine Verdery Collegiate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. His ethnographic historical work focuses on indigenous peoples in southwest China. His research interests encompass ritual politics, the histories of natural history, and the narratives surrounding death, slavery, and literacy. He has directed graduate studies and chaired the Department of Anthropology. Mueggler's notable academic achievements include being a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar and a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship. His significant publications include "Literacy, Sovereignty, Bondage: Native Hereditary Chieftainship in Qing China" and the monograph "Paper Road: Archive Experience and Botanical Exploration in West China and Tibet" published by the University of California Press in 2011. Additionally, he has received a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend and the Julian Steward Award for his contributions to the field of Environmental Anthropology. Mueggler has also been honored with the MacArthur Fellowship for his impactful work in anthropology and related disciplines.
