Biography

Erna van Duren became a member of the School of Hospitality and Tourism at the University of Guelph in 2012, previously serving on the faculty of the Department of Business (2006-2012) and the Food, Agriculture Resource Economics department (1990-2006). Her longstanding interest in food resources stems from an early focus on food security and sustainability. As part of her contributions, she developed the College’s industry-focused MBA and has taught and advised extensively at the graduate level. Erna has worked with industry associations and a variety of organizations focused on policy, economic analysis, and strategy development. She has published cases, journal articles, and research monographs, and developed distance learning courses and textbooks. Her research interests include value chains, competitiveness in the food industry, and corporate social responsibility within food resource industries. Erna received funding from various industry organizations and federal provincial ministries for diverse research projects. Among her notable works are articles addressing strategic alliances in the agricultural sector and the economic analysis of countervailing duties in the agri-food realm.
